How do you check your car’s fuses?

CAR FUSE PRO

There are a number of ways to check the fuses in your car:

  • by visual inspection
  • by checking with a multimeter
  • by using a circuit tester

Visual inspection

blown fuse

Inspect a fuse in your car to check the continuity of the fusible link. If the inner terminal has melted, you will need to replace the fuse. However, sometimes the wire in a blown fuse may look intact.

Testing with a multimeter

testing with a multimeter

First, switch your tester to continuity mode (the icon usually looks like a sound wave). Then touch both fuse terminals with the multimeter probes. If the circuit is good, the tester will beep.

Use a circuit tester

circuit tester

A circuit tester is any voltage tester or lamp connected by wires. To check your fuse, you need to switch on a broken circuit. First, connect the wire of one probe to the (-) terminal of the battery. Then touch one contact point of the fuse with the wire from the second probe. Repeat with the second contact pad. If one fuse terminal shows voltage and the other does not, this means that the fusible link has melted.
